Harris, on SNL, jokes about ending the ‘dramala’
She appeared in an opening segment alongside Maya Rudolph.
After two stops in battle ground states on Saturday, Kamala Harris headed to NYC where she made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live.
The unexpected stop marked another effort from the Harris campaign to reach voters on a national platform in the waning days of the race, while also showing a lighter side to the vice president. Appearing on the live TV is always a risky move for a presidential candidate, but past contenders have also appeared on the show — including Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in 2015 and Barack Obama in 2007. But few have dropped by so late in the campaign.
The vice president appeared in an opening segment alongside Maya Rudolph, the actress who plays Harris on the live sketch-comedy show. In Saturday’s opener, Rudolph, playing Harris, wished aloud that she could talk to “someone who was in my shoes,” particularly a “Black, South Asian woman running for president,” before seeing the real Harris appear, looking back at her in the mirror.
“You and me both, sister,” Harris said.
The two women, wearing identical suits, looked at each other as they laughed for several seconds.
“And I’m just here to remind you, you got this. Because you can do something your opponent cannot do. You can open doors,” Harris said, making a joke about videos of Trump trying to enter a garbage truck at a recent campaign event.
Rudolph laughed dramatically, mimicking the Harris’ laugh.
“Now, Kamala, take my palmala. The American people want to stop the chaos,” Rudolph said.
“And end the dramala,” Harris chimed in.
“With a cool new step mommala,” Rudolph said. “Kick back in our pajamalas and watch a rom-Kamala.”
Harris and Rudolph then stood side by side, with Rudolph saying she’s going to vote for “us.”
“Any chance you are registered in Pennsylvania?” Harris said, laughing.
