EU leaders are in town to talk migration — and deportation.

As European Union leaders gather once again in Brussels, they’re focused on migration to and deportation from the bloc.

In recent days, Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Warsaw would suspend asylum rights for migrants coming to Poland via Belarus. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz shut his country’s borders to EU neighbors following a knife attack allegedly involving a migrant. France’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Michel Barnier, said EU rules on deportations should be revised to speed up expulsions.

On Friday, Italy’s Giorgia Meloni touted her country’s now operational detention centers in Albania. An Italian warship transported 16 migrants to one this week, activating a controversial plan to process thousands of asylum-seekers in a non-EU country.

Speaking of Italy, Meloni will also push at this meeting to begin conversations to normalize ties with war-torn Syria’s dictator in order to facilitate deportations of migrants back to the country. She’ll bring this up as nearly 200,000 Syrians and Lebanese have fled Israel’s ground operation after its early October invasion of Lebanon.
