Macron: ‘Emily in Paris’ must stay in Paris
Hit show wouldn't "make sense" in Rome, the French president told Variety.
French President Emmanuel Macron has a message for Netflix: “Emily in Paris” belongs in Paris.
“We will fight hard. And we will ask them to remain in Paris!” Macron told Variety in an interview published Wednesday. “‘Emily in Paris’ in Rome doesn’t make sense.”
The latest season of the streaming giant’s hit show ends with the titular character, American expat Emily Cooper, ditching the City of Light for Rome.
The show is one of Netflix’s biggest hits and was recently picked up for a fifth season. While it is reviled by some Parisians for its stereotypical depiction of the French capital — angry locals have even defaced shooting locations with profane graffiti — some have warmed up to it. Politicians like Macron have praised the show for being “good for the image of France.”
“‘Emily in Paris’ is super positive in terms of attractiveness for the country,” Macron said.
Macron’s wife, Brigitte, made a rare cameo in the fourth season of the show, which the president said made him “super proud.”
“It’s just a few minutes, but I think it was a very good moment for her,” he said.
Asked if he himself had been invited to appear in the series, Macron joked, “I’m less attractive than Brigitte!”
