Starmer’s promise to Brits: You will have more money in your pockets
Economic growth "must be felt by everyone, everywhere," the prime minister said on Thursday.
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged Thursday British households will feel the benefit in their own pockets of the government’s effort to drive more growth into the economy.
In a setpiece speech, the prime minister promised to raise living standards in every part of the U.K. by the end of the parliament.
Starmer said that would mean “working people have more money in their pocket” through the government’s drive to become the fastest-growing economy in the G7.
“We also believe that growth must be felt by everyone, everywhere,” he said.
To make sure growth is even, the government will measure its progress against real household disposable income and gross domestic product per person.
The new Labour government has made getting growth into the U.K. economy its core mission.
But it has also struggled to get off the mark, and faced criticism following a budget which increased taxes. Starmer’s speech is seen as another attempt to try and generate some enthusiasm from the public.
