UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot Wednesday morning outside of a Hilton hotel in New York City, according to multiple reports.

Thompson, the 50-year-old leader of the health care giant’s insurance unit, was taken to Mount Sinai West in critical condition after a masked shooter shot him in the chest just after 6:45 a.m. at the New York Hilton Midtown, according to reports. He was later pronounced dead.

Police are still searching for the shooter, a police department spokesperson said. Police believe Thompson was targeted in the attack, according to several reports.

UnitedHealthcare was set to host an investor day in New York on Wednesday. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

UnitedHealthcare is part of the larger UnitedHealth Group, which is led by CEO Andrew Witty, who canceled the investor day amid the news of the shooting.

Thompson joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004, according to his LinkedIn, holding multiple executive roles before becoming CEO of UnitedHealthcare, one of the nation’s largest insurers, in April 2021. Thompson lived in Minnesota, where the company is headquartered.

“This is horrifying news and a terrible loss for the business and health care community in Minnesota,” said Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz in a post on X.
