6 Common FASTag Problems and Solutions

Waiting in long queues to cross tolls was a common problem. To address this, FASTag was made mandatory by the NHAI on December 15, 2019, to reduce waiting times and enable electronic toll payments. While it is a quick and convenient option, FASTag users still encounter various issues.

Activating a FASTag account is a relatively long process. You have to open an account by providing personal and vehicle documents. Furthermore, you have to maintain the account at all times to avoid blacklisting. This blog will help you understand six common FASTag problems and their solutions.

Six Common FASTag problems and solutions

Since FASTag became the only option for toll payments in India in 2019, the system is relatively new. It can be said that it is still not perfect and faces issues related to third-party transactions and technical glitches. These common problems often lead to payment issues for users at tolls.

Here are six common FASTag problems with their solutions:

Application process

The first step is to apply for a FASTag. However, NHAI allows numerous banks and NBFCs to issue FASTags. Since all these institutions have different FASTag application processes, navigating and applying can be challenging. Furthermore, the FASTag issuing process may be delayed due to incorrect information or technical glitches.

Solution: Choose the institution in which you have a bank account. Contact their customer care to know about the process. Keep all the information and documents handy while applying.

Damaged or stolen FASTag

Once you get the FASTag, it is glued to your windscreen for automatic scanning. A common problem with this is that it can be easily damaged in the sun or rain or can be lost or stolen. If this happens, you will not be able to pay tolls.

Solution: Try to protect your FASTag sticker from the sun or rain. Stick it on the inside panel of the windscreen and not outside. Contact customer care of the issuing agency right away if it is damaged or stolen.

Recharge failure

Most users rely on third-party online marketplaces or platforms for recharging their FASTag. Recharge failure is a common problem when the money gets deducted from your bank account but does not get credited to your FASTag account.

Solution: Recharge your FASTag account using trusted third-party platforms. If the recharge fails, contact the platform’s customer care immediately for a quick resolution.

Technical Glitches

One of the most common FASTag problems is the FASTag not working or getting scanned at the toll. If your FASTag is not working, you may have to pay with cash, including penalties. However, if the scanner at the toll plaza is not working, you do not have to pay anything.

Solution: There is not much you can do if your FASTag is not working or getting scanned due to technical glitches at your end. However, you can contact customer care to file a complaint and ensure the problem is resolved.

Double deduction

Double deduction is when your FASTag account gets debited for a single toll transaction two times. This generally happens due to a technical glitch either in your FASTag platform or while the transactions get executed.

Solution: The best solution for double deduction is to contact your issuing agency’s customer care right away. Most of them also have a double-deduction reimbursement system, which you can use to resolve this issue. Inform the customer care within 15 days.

Blacklisted FASTag

A blacklisted FASTag is when the issuing agency suspends your FASTag for some reason. Common reasons include insufficient minimum balance, legal violations, pending penalties, outdated KYC information and wrong vehicle registration numbers.

Solution: If your FASTag is blacklisted, check if your account has the minimum balance. If it does, contact customer care to identify the reason and take the necessary steps to reactivate it. In case of a lower balance, recharge your FASTag to reactivate it.

Conclusion

The FASTag system is relatively new, which creates problems for the users. Since you may have to pay double if you use cash to pay tolls, it is important to know about the common FASTag problems. Now that you know how to solve them, you can ensure seamless FASTag transactions.
